Inscribed on back "Elizabeth, daughter of John Gould Esq. Niece of Sir John Wentworth, Bart Governor of Nova Scotia/married in London 14 Sept. 1782, her cousin”.  She married her cousin George  H. Monk  and was mother of Captain John Benning Monk of March.

Original painting belonged to the late David R. Monk, great-great grandson of John Benning Monk (1794-1854) of March.

The Raquette River (Rivière à la raquette) is close to Hudson Heights, Quebec, where the artist had his home and studio. Works by J.C. Pinhey (1860-1912) can be found in the National Gallery of Canada, McCord Museum and the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts.
